Sewing has always been my quiet refuge when the world and people have become too busy and too loud for me. I have been sewing and making since I could use scissors! When I am making something I am the happiest and most free version of myself.

I have always loved making things. My summers off from school were mostly spent making my own paper dolls and all the wardrobes for those girls. I was lost in the process of creativity for hours. I love to be in that zone. It feels like meditation to me.

In 7th grade my favorite class was Home Ec. I could have spent the whole day there! I learned to sew well enough to peg my own jeans and do simple hems and alterations to make my clothes fit me better. I loved the power of doing it myself.

Quite late in life, I went back to school to learn the art of flat pattern making and garment sewing at Apparel Arts in Oakland, CA. These new skills equipped me to make nearly any garment I could imagine. People often ask me what my style is and I usually say “timeless with a hint of vintage.” I like to make simple, comfortable and often unstructured garments made from high quality, natural fabrics like linen, cotton, silk and wool. I like garments that will endure for many seasons. I don’t generally follow fashion trends as I prefer to wear clothes with silhouettes that stand the test of time and look great for as long as possible. I like to let the fabric be the focus and tell the story of the garment.

While finishing up my classes at Apparel Arts I also completed a course in surface pattern design with the goal of designing my own fabric. I can often be found in my garden taking pictures of flowers and vines and imagining the next surface pattern I want to have printed in to fabric.
